Is it true that hemp (aka marijuana) can produce four times the amount of paper per acre as trees?

I don't remember where I heard this fact, but it also mentioned that hemp only takes 3-6 months to mature whereas trees can take up to 100 years. And it is one of the fastest photosynthesizing plants known. Would this be a step toward reversing the greenhouse effect? If this is true then why aren't we planting this stuff everywhere? just because some people choose to smoke it for a buzz? There are deadlier plants in most flower gardens.Does anyone think this stuff should be illegal? If not why is it?

Is it true that hemp (aka marijuana) can produce four times the amount of paper per acre as trees?
Hemp is illegal because it looks so similar to marijuana that legalizing hemp would make enforcing the laws against marijuana impossible. It is indeed many times more productive than growing trees and if you want to make rope, clothing etc. WWII parachutes were made of hemp, and farmers grew it legally and openly well into the 1950's.

Sorry, hemp won't give you a buzz, just a headache.

I find the laws against marijuana to be wrong and stupid, and where I live the mayor, DA and sheriff all agree that enforcing marijuana laws is a very low priority. Don't smoke it anymore, myself, but if I felt the urge, I could find it. Have found that modern pot is so freaking strong that people don't get "high" and giggly much anymore, they get stoned and spacey and stagnant and stupid.
Reply:No it was not because some people choose to smoke it for a buzz ....

USA is the "only" country of the world forbidding planting hemp (Cannabis sativa culta).

In 1937, after a powerful lobbying the USA government declared the "Marijuana Tax Act" rending illegal hemp cultivation.

Harry J. Anslinger, head of the narcotic bureau and promoter of this law, was the nephew of banker "Andrew Mellon" main financier of DuPont de Nemours. DuPont de Nemours (nylon industry), was one of the main lobbyists with the paper industry leaders.

To see the world production data and the manufactured hemp by-products, check the following link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp

I doubt it may be a step toward reversing the greenhouse effect, it might help a little bit, but ..... not enough.
Reply:................................ Hemp is not marijuana..............................

They're in the same family, but not the same stuff. Hemp makes far superior paper to trees. It can be used to make cloth. It grows fast and is renewable.

It was outlawed when the anti-drug crowd made a run on the government and I believe it was Hearst that got hemp included along with marijuana. (Hearst was a newspaper mogal and had thousands of acres of trees he wanted to use for pulp)

President Washington grew hemp, and so did several other presidents after him.
Reply:The UK has been growing de-natured hemp for some years. (the plant has been modified to stop it making the active drug ingredient).

In theory the plant is good for making paper, cloth and was at first seen as being very useful for interior panels on cars, but the processes are more polluting and more costly than other methods so it is very unlikely to catch on.

There have been some funny moments when people have stolen parts of the crop though. They would have had to smoke about a ton of it to have any effect so they end up with a criminal record for stealing something that was worthless to them!
Reply:wow!!! go hemp!!!
Reply:Yeah, go ahead and encourage it. Since you are in need of paper.....
Reply:Oh great. So instead of saying "my dog ate my homework"...I can say "I smoked my homework"!!!
Reply:MARIJUANA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

YUM-YUM!!!
Reply:Yes it is true, In fact I've found that they used it for alot more than just paper and clothing. In Australia; this has been several years back but they were trying to find several different uses for it and this is what they came up with...

They designed a new form of plastic and nylon from hemp that is so strong that they made an engine block and frame for a car out of it. Also when you refine down the seed oil it becomes combustable and environmentally safe alternative to fossil fuel. The reason that the states and the rest of this shitty *** world won't legalize the stuff for domestic use is because it's too hard to tax hemp or marijuana. Not only that but the entire planet was forged and owned by the same products and companies that hemp products would put out of business, as long as the economy bouts down to the people with more money it will never be legal cause they would lose too much money. Think about it like this Tobacco, Alcohol, and oil companies(whom took considerable power 200years ago)would go out of buisness and they pretty much founded and control "FEMA" which owns and controls the government and the government has political influence on the smaller independent countries whom try to follow in the foot steps of their older sister, don't want to lose their finances.(I'm sure you know where I'm going with this) But anyways, if they were to legalize it for domestic use they would do it like food stamps, only so much per month to an individual and it would be taxed and controlled soully by the government would would eventually breed it out of it's potency and lace it with nicoten so they can get people hooked on it like cigerettes.
Reply:Well, when I read this, I immediately thought you were talking about bamboo since (I can't remember the exact figures) but that's the supporting arguments for using bamboo.

I looked it up and found that while hemp produces more paper per acre, the processes that need to be utilized to make the pulp into paper is much more harmful than using trees. In addition, hemp can only be harvested once a year (which sort of puts holes in the whole 3-6 months figure) and needs to be stored for the year. It takes too much manpower and storage.

Great question!
