Reply:1. C - don't jump a queue, it's rude and we have to do that enough without making the queue grow in front of you while waiting.

2. A - give a little space please.

3. C - although I prefer A

4. What do you know about your boss? a nice bottle of wine could be good, but know your host. Nothing too personal as that is inappropriate.

5. B - Immigrant workers and Politics are not topics that should be discussed with new acquaintences. Unless you are in a political arena. Care needs to be taken with work in mixed groups.

C - everyone must take their turn

2. In Britain if someone stands very close to you when having a conversation, perhaps even touching you on the shoulder or back, would you ...?

a) Move away a little

b) Do the same to them

c) Get embarrassed and freeze

A - I don’t know them, so I want to keep my distance, I may also freeze with embarrassment; it’s a little strange to do that.

3. In a British bar when would you be asked to pay for your drinks?

a) After having been served at the bar

b) On being served at the table

c) After the first round has been consumed

d) Just before you go home.

Unless you have a tab (d), you pay once the drinks are served (a). you’d have a tab if you were at a table; it’s very crude to pay at the table of a bar.

4. Which gift would be suitable if you were invited to a dinner-party at your boss’s house?

Normally unless otherwise stated you’d bring a (wine) bottle.

5. In Britain when chatting with someone you have just met would you talk about ... ?

a) Immigrant workers

b) The weather

c) Your work/studies

d) The politics

We’d discuss the weather (b) as politics are a personal subject and no one else’s business, work or schooling is none of their business though it could come-up if you were introduced to them you may ask them what they are reading (studying). Immigrant workers, is a touchy subject; one may hold a view that is the reverse of the other person which could cause friction.

the first 2 options are silly

queing is a very sensitive subject, as people dont do it in other countries, it is seen as a fair way to make sure everyone has to wait the same ammount of time, as fairness is also very important. but a que also suggests that the place has bad service, i mean a que of 2 or so people is fine, but 7 people, and you would be complaining that it is too long and you shouldnt have to wait that long. so yea jumping a que is a very rude thing to do.

introducing oneself by ones surname, it can be rude, it depends if the person youre introducing yourself to is providing you with a service or something, and then you can say "im miss farqueharson" or whatever your name is.

otherwise its rude.

2. i feel the question should be

"should you" instead of "would you"

most people here are familar with the concept of personal space which many people arnt in other countries. but if someone stands too close you should move away a little if you feel uncomfortable, or if they keep coming closer i might use larger hand gestures to push them away with lolz. it would be rude to confront them.

3. depends if its a pub or a bar, if youre going to eat or not, if the place is busy.

at a pub, you order your drinks at the bar, and usually you pay when ordering it, unless you are a regular/plan on staying a long time and then they set up a tab for you.

in a bar, depending on how busy it is, you find your seats first, decide what youre going to have and then someone will come over and take your order unless its busy and then you go to the bar and order what you want. they will bring you a little saucer with the bill in it, unless you want to pay at the bar if you go up there and then you can. if you get it brought to you, then you put your money in the saucer and they will come and get it, or you take it to the bar. if youre having food you pay for everything at the bar at the end.

4. a bottle of wine, or flowers, or a box of nice chocolates, or something nice for their home, maybe an interesting candle or something like that.

5. the traditional topic of choice is the weather, it fills any dull moment in convosation, everyone has something to say. its general chit chat, no opinions necisary etc

but people do talk about immigrants, particuarly eastern european

the other 2 choices are too personal too soon

if you want me to answer any more questions then just ask!
