The loon has parasites that are specialized to this bird. These have coevolved so the parasite is an obligate parasite. If the loon becomes extinct the specialized parasite will also become extinct. deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42...
Meggin Weinandt of Northern Michigan University is studying loon parasites. She will study the chemical and visual cues used by certain species of black fly to identify their apparently exclusive food source--the Common Loon and their ability to transmit blood parasites between loons.

"Loons are known to be infected with 22 species of degenetic trematodes and 18 of cestodes, whereas the figures for grebes are 108 and 86, respectively."
Since loons and grebes are not closely related at all, but rather an example of convergence, they do reflect differences in their respective parasite loads. .
